Shingles

(Woy Woy Walk #75)

Bit cooler today so I toddled off. We didn't get the promised storm yesterday but there was a bit of a cool breeze last night. Today is grey and overcast.

Got a couple of views of the old shingled place down on Orange Grove Road. It's listed in my hist list as "hospital (part): former house, Rock Davis ... 1860s". From Orange Grove Road you can only see the roof. The gate's at the end of Cedar Crescent and the block runs from Orange Grove Road down to the water. The old building is heritage listed according to local rumour and the way the new wall and the building don't touch it makes me think the rumour's true.

Shingles
(Big version (pissy resolution))

Detail of the shingled roof. Shingles were made from thin wood or slate slab. These are slate.

These are wooden shingles on the roof of a house on McMasters Road. Taken last week.

Iron lace
(Big version)

Detail of the iron lace. Iron lace is cast or wrought iron veranda railings and other bits on the exterior of a house. It is much loved.

Low tide at Blackwall
(Big version)

Wandered off to the foreshore near Blackwall Mountain. There's a lovely old house there painted in Federation cream and red. Could I find the bastard? I could not.

Lurked in the park for a bit enjoying the mistiness and the colours of a grey day. It was low tide and you could see just how shallow most of the water round the Peninsula is.

Blackwall-Orange Grove corner
Big version)

More mudflats, Saratoga (hill) and St Huberts Island from Blackwall Road above Blackwall Point. That looks like Green Point in the right background.

That's the old Woy Woy Hospital (sometimes called the Orange Grove Hospital) up there. It was still a working hospital (of sorts -- no emergency services or anything) when I was a kid living up Cedar Crescent in the 1960's, but it closed sometime 1970-ish, I think. It was definitely one of those grand old verandah'd houses, much bigger and in better condition in those days...

Thanks for the detail. Good stuff.

I did wonder if they'd pulled anything down. There's quite a bit of land there.

There's a large-ish structure close to the water that looks 70s. It also looks like it was built by a drunk amateur with both hands tied behind his back.

There's a lot of really ugly 70's and 80's rebuilding along the Orange Grove Road waterfront that replaced the older fibro and wood constructions. Down comes the old verandah and up goes a concrete wall with aluminium edgings... urgh.

To appreciate the true horror of it all, rent a boat sometime and go from Booker Bay (Machan's Marina or something like that) up to Blackwall Point.

Incidentally, Rock Davis used to have a boat-building yard just up (i.e. east) from the old Hospital along Cedar Crescent; a few decades ago you could still come across old bits of wood, iron, etc., on the waterfront that came from the yard. Most of that evidence has gone now, though.

There's a few old fibro places left in Uralla Lane down at the Blackwall Road end of Orange Grove Road. Right up near the top. Don't think they're too visible from Orange Grove Road.

I've got plans to do that. I'm hoping to get a decent shot of Sam Murrary's circa 1910 cottage at Bilba Avenue. Saw part of it last year I think. A small green tin roofed cottage next to a marina.

Pity about Rock Davis' boatyard bits being gone. Saw a print of that, possibly at the National Print Gallery site.
