The Castle

(Gosford walkies #28)

The Castle Donnison Street West, West Gosford

The challenge was to get a photo of The Castle, on Donnison Street West just inside the Gosford-West Gosford boundary.

It had a dungeon when JayJay used to live there and the guy who owned it kicked his family out so he could make it into a castle. Watched too many Disney cartoons methinks.

It's now for lease. Despite the view (scroll down) I'm thinking it might be empty for a while. Turrets ain't everyone's cuppa tea.

The Castle Donnison Street West, West Gosford

The Castle can be seen from Mann Street and puzzles many. From Mann Street the angle of view gives it quite a Gothic look. Seen up close against the backdrop of the gums on Presidents Hill it looks quite bizarre.

Brisbane Water from Donnison Street West, West Gosford

Peculiarities aside, the building has a good view down Brisbane Water to Lion Island and even Barrenjoey Head.

Despite being very short today's walk was hot. It's probably around 30 (83 F) now. I'll have to go back to Woy Woy walkies after Christmas. The hottest month will be February and January will be bloody near baking alive as well.

I wouldn't be rushing to buy a castle even if I had the means, but owning one seems to be the dream of many. There was a 135-year-old castle in San Francisco that went up for auction last year. It was originally a brewery, but was shut down during Prohibition, and has underground pools of water and caverns. Before it was sold, it was being rented by a group of people that often held parties there. I had a chance to check out the place before it sold. A pretty fun place to have a party, but not a place I would want to live (too dark!). It will be interesting to see if and when someone buys this Gosford castle!

Good Heavens above! What a monstrosity!

A good castle is never under 500 years old. Never! Ours will be 940 next year...

Jen - Definitely a cool place for parties and whatnot, particularly with them underground caverns and pools. You could get all dram and order the servants to drag people off to the dungeons.

Device dear - Yers. And I've deliberately not included a cloe-up. The brick looks so tacky.

A good castle needs good ghosts and plenty of ancient rooms with dessicated rellies hanging in bat form from the rafters I presume?

You presume correctly.

Of course, the rellies must be able to use a Hoover to vacuum up their flakes of skin...

Ew! Reminds me of that rather put-upon plasticine fella in some Beeb kids' show. Trap Door or summat.

My girlfriend lives there. Her Grandparents moved from China in the 1980's, and her Grandfather built it in 1999. His style choice comes from his fascination with Medieval times and what not. He's a lovely man, and he has a secret library in it, that's pretty castl-ey aha
